Wonderfully Blunt

This article from Drawer is great. Its no nonsense, hit you over the head with a 2×4 bluntness makes you cringe, laugh and pray that you don’t unwittingly fall into the hack category. Good reading.

The Newness

Yup. I’ve gone and done it again. The site is redesigned – only this time it’s not just a redesign, I’ve combined my blog with my photography site (formerly http://jgardnerphoto.com). Why, you ask? A good question. (more…)

The Girl Effect

Quick post since I’m nearing the end of my NanoWriMo novel. I’ll be back soon, I promise. This is just too good to pass by though, both from a design standpoint and from an amazing cause standpoint. Check out the video then got to their webpage and check out the stories of a few girls.  The idea isn’t new (check out Greg Mortenson for more info), but I’m really glad that it is finally gaining momentum

What’s your color IQ?

Fun color IQ test.  You have to arrange the color chips into the correct order based on hue.  It’s tough, I got an 8 – though I’m not really sure what that means.  They say that 0 is a perfect score and it looks like it is based on a 100 point scale..maybe.  Check it out here.

Why mac is better…

ArsTechnica author Peter Bright, has penned a beauty. What Microsoft could learn from Apple, is a lengthy, well thought out and pride inducing piece on the history, design decisions and development opportunities of both the MS Windows OS and the Apple Mac OSX platforms. The first three parts can be found at these three links and there, apparently, is a fourth part in the works.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

While a lot of the in-depth OS structures and conventions flew a little over my head, I did immensely enjoy the parts discussing the GUI’s of each system. Basic gist, Apple eats it’s own dog food. Another way of saying that not only did they develop a core set of values and design decisions, they practice what they preach by applying those decisions across the board to their own projects. This gives a clear message to programmers of third party apps that they should follow Apples lead. And in the end, you know what? It leads to a nicer looking and more usable OS for all users!

Well done with the words good sir. Keep up the good work.

Well played

So I recently discovered Wx through a post by John Gruber on DNS lookups. Funny roundabout way to find out about a really sweet weather tracking app but hey….whachya gonna do?

Wx is a mac app that tracks up to 20 different weather points, complete with radar and the works, it is amazing. Many thanks go to Craig Hunter the developer.

I was loading it with weather stations this morning and I noticed that there is a menu option to email the developer:

Wx menu

What a cool idea. And what a way to really take ownership of an app. I guess in Craig’s case, being the sole developer, it makes perfect sense but for any small group developing apps (desktop or web) I’d love to see the same degree of openness and ownership. Give the users an easy way to yell in your ear, good or bad.

Who designs this crap?!

One word. Microsoft.

Makes you feel a bit odd huh? You’re mouse isn’t a mouse (which makes it sounds like something nice, cute and cuddly) it is a “USB Human Interface Device”. Because, let’s face it, you’re computer is controlling you. Not the other way around.

And yes, that is a Smashing Magazine Desktop behind the little popup.
